Narek Hakhnazaryan cello

Pärt Fratres

Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1

R. Strauss Also sprach Zarathustra

An evening of musical drama opens with Estonian Arvo Pärt’s Fratres.  Set for strings, claves, and a single bass drum, Fratres emerges as a striking example of how rich and spiritual music can evolve out of humble ingredients.  Cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan, a Tchaikovsky Competition winner, makes his Erie Philharmonic debut with Shostakovich’s searing Cello Concerto No. 1.  The concert closes with Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra. With a rumble of an organ and a triumphant blast of the brass, this famous tone poem will be instantly recognized, most notably from Stanley Kubrick’s iconic film, 2001: A Space Odyssey
