From Russia With Love

Thursday, January 21 · 8:00pm

Daniel Meyer music director
Erica Snowden-Rodriguez cello
Nathan Hess piano

Program to include selections from:

  • Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings

  • Auerbach String Symphony

  • Stravinsky Apollo

  • Borodin String Quartet No. 2

  • Prokofiev Cello Sonata

Join us in January as we delve into the Russian soul with the Erie Philharmonic.

We bookend our concert with music from one of the masterpieces for string orchestra, Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings.  From his elegant Viennese-style waltz to a roaring folk dance, the Serenade is a synthesis of folk and art traditions that made Tchaikovsky such an intriguing and inspiring figure.  The principals of the Philharmonic’s string section take center stage in a performance of Borodin’s touching Nocturne from his String Quartet No. 2, and Stravinsky is represented in music from his 1928 neo-classical ballet Apollo.  We also perform contemporary music of Russian-born Lera Auerbach, in a tragic but illuminating string symphony aptly titled ‘Memoria de la luz’.

This concert will be made available online during the week following the broadcast. Please watch our social media accounts for more information.
